Mein erstes Wettbewerbsprojekt, noch als Student — mit wenig Verdienst, aber unbedingtem Ehrgeiz. Zu dritt entwickelten wir den Beitrag vollständig von Hand: der Architekt und ein Kollege die Grundrisse, ich Ansichten und Schnitte, dazu ein gefrästes Aluminiummodell. Der Wettbewerb war hochkarätig besetzt — 1. Preis ging an Raimund Abraham, 2. Preis an Hans Hollein, 3. Preis an Wolfgang Tschapeller. Wir schieden in der ersten Runde aus, doch die Teilnahme an einem Verfahren dieses Ranges war für einen jungen Architekturstudenten prägend.

My first competition project, still a student — with little pay but unconditional ambition. Together with two colleagues, we developed the entry entirely by hand: the architect and a colleague drew the floor plans, I drew elevations and sections, alongside a milled aluminium model. The competition field was formidable — 1st prize went to Raimund Abraham, 2nd to Hans Hollein, 3rd to Wolfgang Tschapeller. We were eliminated in the first round, but taking part in a process of this calibre was formative for a young architecture student.
